The footballer and goodwill ambassador of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Raul Gonzalez Blanco have received the Solidarity Award in Sport, awarded by the Spanish Olympic Committee in Madrid.
The ” Awards for Solidarity in Sport “are granted by the Spanish Olympic Committee, the Spanish Paralympic Committee, the Community and the city council of Madrid and the SOS Foundation. Promoted by the International Olympic Committee, this award aims to promote, disseminate and finance solidarity projects in the field of sport.
Raul was appointed goodwill ambassador of FAO more than three years ago. Since then he has collaborated on various initiatives, such as the recent campaign ”The Football League with FAO against hunger” and has also traveled to Senegal to find out personally the work of the organization.
The jury considered that the role of Raul as an ambassador of FAO and the Telefood program initiatives of the Organization of the UN are the best examples of aid that sport can provide for specific projects.
The prize, worth 30,000 Euros, will finance five microprojrcts FAO TeleFood against hunger that will provide school gardens in two regions of Nicaragua and Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, the creation of a group of people to take care of a group of sick people, widows and orphans of AIDS in Kinshasa (DRC) and the strengthening of a community nursery for the spread of forest species in Ecuador.
TeleFood, was created after the World Food Summit of 1996 and has since generated more than $ 20 million in donations, which have helped finance more than 2,500 projects in 130 countries around the world.
